SNF Data Validation Process Beginning January 2026
At Simple, we closely monitor CMS guidance and regulatory updates to help Skilled Nursing Facilities stay informed and prepared for changes that may affect reporting, quality programs, and compliance. As part of this effort, we’re sharing an important notice from CMS regarding the SNF Value-Based Purchasing Data Validation Process.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced that the Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) Value-Based Purchasing (VBP) Data Validation Process officially began on January 1, 2026, with provider notifications starting in mid-January 2026.
As part of this process, SNF providers have been randomly selected for Minimum Data Set (MDS) data validation. CMS began notifying selected facilities by uploading selection letters to the MDS 3.0 Provider Preview Reports folders in iQIES beginning mid-January.
Providers are encouraged to begin preparing now to ensure awareness, readiness, and timely response if selected.
What Is the SNF Data Validation Process?
The SNF Data Validation Process is designed to verify the accuracy of MDS-based quality measures used in both the SNF Value-Based Purchasing (VBP) Program and the Skilled Nursing Facility Quality Reporting Program (QRP).
This process was established under Section 1888(h)(12) of the Social Security Act, which requires CMS to apply a formal data validation process to SNF VBP and QRP measures.
CMS finalized implementation details in the:
- FY 2024 SNF PPS Final Rule (CMS-1779-F)
- FY 2025 SNF PPS Final Rule (CMS-1802-F)
CMS stated that data validation would apply to MDS-based measures beginning with the FY 2027 program year / FY 2025 performance period.
What This Means for SNF Providers
The SNF Data Validation Process adds an additional layer of oversight to how CMS verifies the accuracy, completeness, and reliability of MDS data used for:
- SNF VBP scoring
- QRP reporting
- Quality measure calculations
Facilities will be randomly selected, and selection does not indicate performance concerns. However, selected providers will be required to review notifications, support validation activities, and respond within CMS timelines.
This underscores the importance of strong internal MDS processes, documentation practices, and data review workflows.
What Providers Should Do Now
SNF providers should take the following steps:
- Monitor iQIES closely in mid-January 2026 for selection notifications
- Identify staff responsible for reviewing Provider Preview Reports folders
- Ensure MDS documentation and quality workflows are organized and accessible
For Simple clients, selection notices will also appear within the iQIES automated Reports section under:
“SNF VBP/QRP Data Validation Process: Selection Notification”
Simple Will Continue to Share Updates
Simple will continue tracking CMS guidance and sharing regulatory updates to support SNF operational readiness. As more information becomes available on the SNF Data Validation Process, we’ll continue providing education and resources.
If you have questions or need assistance locating reports in iQIES, our support team is available to help.
