Latest Update on Minimum Mandatory Staffing Requirements Brings a Sigh of Relief for Staffing-Strapped Providers
Several weeks ago, a federal judge in Texas ruled that CMS does not have the authority to mandate and enforce the proposed minimum mandatory staffing requirements. Controversial from its beginnings, the impending requirement has been met with significant opposition from SNF groups across the country, many of which have been faced with historic levels of staffing turnover and hiring challenges.
The ruling appears to halt the implementation of the proposed mandatory staffing requirement for the time being. The situation is still considered to be fluid, however. Stay tuned for more updates.
Just Dropped: April Five-Star Refresh Data
The April Five-Star Report comes with a refreshed staffing calculation. It includes the staffing data submitted for October – December 2024. The care compare data set was released later than was expected, but is also now available and is showing in the SimplePBJ application.

Time marches on: Updated look-back period
Five-Star Reports for April, May, and June 2025 will use the look-back period of July 2023 – December 2024 for PBJ turnover calculations.
